The Sun‘s history writer John Mackie did a nice feature on the opening of Kitsilano Pool on August 15, 1931.

Two thoughts: If Kits Pool did not exist, would we build it today?
If John Mackie did not exist, would The Sun have a history writer?

I doubt the pool would get approved today. Losing valuable, heritage beachfront? Oh, dear. Not going to happen.
Electricity and natural gas would never get approved either. Imagine, a big, corporate conglomerate wants to pump high pressured, toxic gas into your kids’ homes. It’s so unsafe. Sometimes they explode. They cannot guarantee our safety. Imagine the fear and protests.
Automobiles would never get approved either.
It wouldn’t be built the same way because of the negative impact on shore habitat.
Maybe it wouldn’t be built at all because pools are expensive to build and maintain. The outdoor pool at Ambleside beach was closed a long time ago – 1970s?
