Fire Porn: Beautiful B.C. Ablaze

It’s the perfect story for the media – dramatic, visual, rapidly changing, with personal stories both tragic and heroic.

Even the print media are running with the visual angle.  Here’s The Sun‘s gallery:

Fire porn.

But there are some words that cannot be said.

As near as I can tell, few of the media have so far explored the connection between climate change, the drought and this disastrous fire season – much less the connection to the infestation of mountain pine beetle due to warmer winters, literally adding fuel to the fire – and what we may expect for the future.

Yes, weather is not climate.  But this is weather consistent with the global changes predicted by climatolgists and now showing up in the data:

And surely, it’s relevant to acknowledge the underlying anxiety we all feel, as every beautiful day we enjoy in the city reminds us of the new normal in the wild lands of this province – as seen on the front pages and leads of every newscast.
