Referendum: Responses from MLAs – Weekly Count – 4

Three weeks left until the ballots go out for one of the most significant votes ever held in Metro Vancouver – and a majority of MLAs have responded to our questions.  But it’s still not clear where many of the elected provincial representatives of this region stand.   Should MLAs remain uncommitted on an issue like this?

  1. Hi Gord: Can you provide a score sheet of those for and against? And perhaps ask why the yes supporters haven’t been more vocal?

PT: All the MLAs who have responded so far have committed themselves to a Yes vote, and are advising their constituents to do so too. Except for Vicki Huntington, the Independent MLA from Delta South, who is “not urging my constituents one way or the other and am advising the residents of South Delta to carefully consider the referendum question.”

  3. Mr. Gordon Sturdy, MLA, West Vancouver for Sea to Sky, is the Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure…could one expect a response from him to such an important issue on transportation in his constituency?

  4. Isn’t it pretty obvious that the people who haven’t responded are in the No camp or at least are afraid of alienating their No Constituents? I wouldn’t be holding my breath for a response

  5. Polls say 53% for No, 38% for Yes…Apparently, people do not seem to care what MLAs or “experts” think…And frankly Translink and the YES campaign should just not do anything because every time they do or announce something they lose even more vote…Didn’t they start at 55% for Yes in September?

  6. I think that you can trace the beginning of the downfalls of the yes vote to the announcement that Gregor will lead the yes campaign…Talk about epic fail in not understanding the constituents…Outside of Vancouver proper Gregor is un-electable. People hate his guts because he has done everything in his power to make life miserable for commuters outside of Vancouver proper. And now he leads the campaign for reducing congestion??? Ha…Good luck…

    1. Totally agree. I thought Hepner from Surrey was the natural choice, biggest city in the Valley where transport improvements are needed most. Major blunder.

    2. Yes, a lot of Vancouverites underestimate how much Robertson is disliked in the suburbs. This along with the desperate CEO ploy has likely doomed the referendum.

    3. Well said. He should resign from the MetroVan Majors Council if the referendum fails. If plan A fails then mayors need to move to plan B: property taxes increases, land transfer tax increases, huge parking fee increases and more borrowing.

The lack of communication is a major problem. The Mayors should have said: Here is our preferred plan (namely A, 0.5% sales tax increase). If you prefer plan B that is OK too.

I like Plan C better: more borrowing, far more RAPID transit ie subways (along Hastings, to N-Van, to W-Van, to UBC, along 41st, to Langley, to Delta) , road tolls and property taxes increases (with rebates to BC income tax payers), land transfer tax increases (with rebates to BC income tax payers) and huge parking fee increases but that needs provincial support.
