Due to B.C. Hydro construction work down the alley between Richards and Homer, a flag person was stationed at the alley’s entrance this morning.  He chose to stop cars from entering the alley and hold his discussions with them as they blocked the bike lane.

He could have stood at the south side of the bike lane.  His choice could create a dangerous condition for people on bikes, because they could go in front of such cars in an ambiguous situation, or go behind them into car traffic in the Dunsmuir car lanes. At best, they stop and wait.  Either way, it’s a situation not handled very well.

  1. Did you talk to him ? Most people are reasonable. he may not be aware of the issue, but to block cars he has to stay on the bike lane, not behind it.
Unclear why they did not tape it off, though ?

  2. Regarding flag persons: if you speak to them, they will tell you that they are sent to different places daily and given little direction; some use their common sense, and some don’t. Better instruction is needed, and follow-up by those familiar with the area and its dangers.
