“Flow Streets” in Oakland

Oakland, California is announcing 74 miles of street closures to permit runners/bikers/walkers to use the streets while maintain social distancing #oaklandflowstreets.

Note that they’re not calling them ‘road closures’ but “flow streets.”  And they’re in almost every neighbourhood.

So far, we have about 15 kilometres, I’d estimate.

  1. I support this plan, and hope it will land in Vancouver. I wonder what it takes or make these streets clearly available to intended users, and off limits to prohibited vehicles. Signs saying “Flow Street. Local traffic only”? Signs every block? The messaging matters, and the economics are critical when basic human needs are pressing every public dollar.
