Terribly out of scale with the neighbourhood.
Should we tear down the Lee Building kitty-corner? It’s surely been ruining the neighbourhood with it’s scale since 1912
Both those photos are cleverly chosen not to show the Lee Building, which is dwarfed by this monumental piece of blandness.
@ Bob, just wait until the Safeways site on the SE corner of Kingsway x Broadway is underway, probably about the same time as the Broadway subway Mount Pleasant Station is being built.
Do you mean the Buy Low/School Board mall property? (Not Safeway)
The Kingsgate Mall site. Back when I lived nearby it was a Safeways. I believe it’s now owned by a pension fund.
Yay future slums of east van!
The redevelopment of Main and Quebec streets, from Broadway to 2nd, are also proceeding.
I know there are a lot of people opposed to this development, but I beg to differ. It is already a major transit hub with numerous bus routes passing by here. It is also going to a SkyTrain station on the extended Millennium Line. To me, it makes perfect sense to build density at major transit hubs.
YES it makes sense to build density at transit hubs, but it makes more sense to build RESIDENTIAL density near employment hubs. The Rize does both
About time we see some density there. Plus: funding for Broadway subway is now announced to the tune of 80% and in time we see more of these buildings all along Broadway. BRAVO.
What’s the price per sq ft there ? sub $1000 ? sub $800 ? More housing is good, but likely not affordable at all unless one goes further out to New West, Burnaby, Surrey or Richmond.
The bigger question is: why are we not digging a tunnel yet under Broadway. When will this start ? 2020 ? 2022 ? 2025 ?
If affordable New West ,Surrey & Richmond had more job creating I C I . Residents would not need subsidized mobility . They could walk to work instead. The new residents of the Rize will probably have that option
It’s a pretty inane residential building. Is it “controversial” because it’s not exactly the same as all the other buildings in the neighbourhood? Is this the source of opponents’ angst?
