Under the Heritage Action Plan of 2015, development commenced on a new thematic framework in order to update the Vancouver Heritage Register so that it reflected newer approaches to heritage. This includes recognizing a broader range of heritage values beyond just the architectural. This work on the new framework is nearing completion and will change how we evaluate and recognize heritage in the city.
Heritage consultant Donald Luxton of Donald Luxton & Associates Inc., who is conducting the update, will introduce the new thematic framework and panelists will explore what the adoption of these broader heritage values may mean for communities, our definition and understanding of heritage, and the progression of heritage planning in Vancouver.

Joanne Proft – Manager, Community Planning and Transportation at UBC
Tanis Knowles Yarnell – Planner, Heritage Action Plan Implementation, City of Vancouver

This is a panel that is desperately needed. We should also pay the big bucks for consultants, directors, planners, and presidents to be the arbiters of taste on heritage/classic cars. God forbid you should junk your old Buick because someone has fond memories of it in their youth. You’ll die and get over it.
Who wrote this folderol on the future of heritage in Vancouver? Who is the “we”? Do “we” love hockey? Some do. I find it stupefyingly boring. Do “we” love fireworks? Do “we” love antique stores? What a pile.
“We” have gone from perceiving Strathcona as a worthless slum to seeing preservation value in mouldering builders’ specials.
I’d rate my appreciation and understanding of old houses in the top five percentile, but if my skin isn’t in the game, if it’s not my house, it’s none of my business.
If someone like Rennie wants to preserve a building like the Wing Sang and has the cash to do it – that’s his business.
