On the way home from errands today — passed this building at 1210 Jervis (just off Davie). An old beauty, with Santa beaming from an upstairs window. This is the Holly Lodge, built in 1912, and going strong as a rental apartment building.

Count the ways this wonderful building could never be built today! No parking! No Elevators! Too tall! Damages neighborhood character!
Actually, it does have one tiny, creaky elevator, but yes, it could never be built today with its odd little staircases and corridors.
Reminds me of the original entrance to St Paul’s Hospital (which was built out in front of):

It’s the only Vancouver residential apartment building designed by San Francisco based Wright, Rushforth & Cahill. Wright was the lead partner, and originally from England, but Bernard Cahill was the lead designer, from San Francisco. It dates from 1910, and was completed a year later at a cost of $100,000.
I like the use of white stripes between the reddish brown bricks.
I lived there in a 1 bedroom in 1996-97 for $620 per month. I also felt the allure of a connection with the past. And yes, the location is fantastic, a real neighborhood with everything you need nearby on Davie St. and of course Stanley Park and English Bay as well. At the time Main Street was not the Main St. of today. So essentially the only attractive areas (to me) were The West End and Commercial Drive.
Do you or anyone else reading this have any pictures of the interior?
I may have pics. I was there in the 90’s as well. Loved this building.
