Is far higher Vancouver’s answer to affordability and commuting problems, asks provocative Vancouver architect Richard Henriquez.

Local Input~ Vertical City for Brian Hutchinson story. How high do we go? What do you think ? Is this a mere marketing ploy for his firm, Henriquez Partners Architects ? Or is there merit to this ?
They are also working on the new very dense (but not nearly as high) Oakride Center project which will look like this:

Seems gimmicky to me.
Just rezone *some*, not even most or all of the vast swaths of single family houses to 4 storey townhouse/rowhouse type development and there’s no need for these ridiculous architects wet dreams.
A very witty design rationale. Just upend Granville Street, including the north on / off ramps, pivot it 90 degrees, and hang a block on either side. And we know that at today’s prices the penthouses will go for at least $10 million a square foot. All the more reason to make the top level public space. Who needs the Highline when you can have a park in the stratosphere?
Clearly this is a marketing ploy and topic of discussion. Forget height. That thing’s base will wipe out 16 square blocks of downtown. Property acquisition alone will be $5B-$10B. Even the Saudis wouldn’t build this thing.
It’s not even a marketing ploy it’s so disconnected to reality.
It looks like something a high school student [or elementary school student] might create (using meccano).
Felt compelled to add, it’s a Trojan Horse, disguised in Erickson’s ideology / methodology! Or, as it’s been said, a gimmick!
