Lessons from London

Some “Lessons from London” for my Canadian planning and development colleagues interested in retrofitting cities (and suburbs) for more convenient walking and cycling. You might be surprised to know that bicycles account for 25 percent of all vehicles at peak hour in central London – truly incredible growth driven by rising car and transit costs, the convenience of bicycles over other modes, and in no small part to the 2012 Olympics and the stunning performance of Wiggins, Froome and other UK cyclists.
Not the same for many of the boroughs outside the city centre. Many of them are trying to catch up. I cycle 30 km daily from Richmond to Mayfair and see many areas for simple infrastructure improvements that would increase safety and enjoyment for cycle commuters.
Here is a synopsis of two initiatives from Greater London.
