Brown Bag Lunch & Learn: Mole Hill – Preservation for the Community
Architect Sean McEwen will share the story of how a City-wide coalition saved a neighbourhood of historic homes, known as Mole Hill, from the threat of demolition to become one of the West End’s most successful examples of heritage preservation. With an active lane filled with gardens and space to socialize, and a summer Farmers Market on Comox Street, this high-density affordable and social housing project with a few privately owned homes is a successful model for utilizing heritage buildings to create livable communities.

Walking Tour: In the Footsteps of the Past: Retracing South Asian History in Kitsilano
In 1908, the first Sikh Gurdwara in North America opened in Kitsilano. Located at 1866 West 2nd Avenue, this religious, social and political gathering place was situated next to homes owned by the South Asian community and the sawmills where they worked. Join
Naveen Girn, Curator and Community Engagement Specialist and Paneet Singh, Filmmaker and Researcher, for a walking tour that will retrace the living legacy of this important space for the South Asian community. We’ll point out both lost and existing buildings that illustrate the intercultural past of Vancouver, the fight against racial discrimination, and the stories that still resonate today.
