Further to making cycling safer at intersections (below post), the City just took another helpful step over the long weekend where the Hornby and Dunsmuir protected bike lanes meet.

When I cycled through on Saturday, crews were drilling the street apart – so I naturally assumed the work was for utilities or some other priority. But no, it was to make the problematic intersection safer for bicyclists and pedestrians by extending their zone into the street, discouraging left turns and clarifying respective spaces.

I don’t know what the plan is but that intersection can often be awkward to maneuver. Because of the timing of the walk signal and turning right or left when cycling west, it basically encouraged people cycling to aggressively push their way through before the light changes again.
It’ll be interesting to see what the new design is.
Here’s a multi-use intersection viewed from my hotel window in Copenhagen:

I could easily see cars making a right turn across the lowered section of curb/median (which looks like a driveway entrance), despite what looks like a no right turn sign.
I find with this curb extension that making the turn east from Hornby is more awkward and dangerous than before. I don’t know about others, but I saw no problems with this intersection before.
