Lecture – Climate change: Facts are not enough – May 8

Talking Climate: Why Facts are Not Enough with Dr. Katharine Hayhoe

 .

How can scientists effectively engage on climate issues in what is becoming an increasingly hostile public environment? Our first instinct is often to assume that we just need more information; but social science shows that scientific literacy is not correlated with greater acceptance of climate science, but rather with greater polarization. Understanding the reasons that have created and fed this polarization is crucial to bridging the divide and inspiring positive action, based on a foundation of shared values and concerns.

  1. By far the biggest challenges climate scientists have are being woefully wrong and defiantly ignorant about facing that. Their estimates have been way off, and have – after much begrudgment) revised them, only to be proven wrong again. IPCC modelling discredited itself. “Yes, we were wrong, but it’s too early to determine why.” Brilliant.

  2. Some people think that if they do a rain dance, it will rain. The conceit and arrogance of the humanoid is boundless. Remember the corn for SUV fuel madness? Buy curly fluorescent bulbs with mercury and Save the Planet. Knit another sweater, turn down the thermostat and Save the Planet. Ban the car and Save the Planet. We now ship milk and juice cartons by ocean going bunker-oil burning ships to Asia for recycling into toilet paper, to Save the Planet. George Carlin should have been cloned!

The world is not short of believers in abstract powers. Climate Scientology is a big business. “There’s a sucker born every minute”
