Cooper Union was established by the philanthropist Peter Cooper on the premise that it be “open and free to all.” Last year, after the school said it faced financial ruin otherwise, it began charging tuition. Its problems are multiple, according to the New York Times, but one reason, apparently, was the cost of 41 Cooper Square – well over $100 million for less then 200,000 square feet. The money, I presume, went into the energy systems, the stainless steel skin on the outside, and possibly the complexity of the internal steel latice. It’s certainly the main piece of eye candy.
