Successful Public Art on Transit

At least Dave Godin likes this:

I thought I would share a snapshot I just took of the new public art that now covers up the bare concrete end-cap of the elevated SkyTrain tracks at the Richmond-Brighouse station terminus of the Canada Line. It certainly is colourful and it reminds me a bit of the cluster of rocket engines on the spaceship that was recently re-installed in the reconfigured park beside the southern off-ramp of the Cambie Street Bridge, opposite the Olympic Village Canada Line station.

If I’m not mistaken, the new public art in the photo was paid for in part, or perhaps in full, by the new mixed-use development that is under construction adjacent to the Richmond-Brighouse station.

There was an ideas/design competition a little while back for this art installation, but I missed the salient detail of who actually won, so seeing the successful design up on the tracks provided my first impression. I think it’s pretty cool.

  1. Called “Cluster,” the sculpture was created by Carlyn Yandle, a former Editor with The Richmond Review newspaper. The installation will be up for a year before being replaced by another called SkyDam. I also quite like Cluster. It looks like the nerves inside the Canada Line guideway.

  2. It may look better from more of a side angle, when more of the tubes’ colours are visible.

I wonder if the pigeons or swallows will roost in them ?
