Art: Vancouver, Special

In the lobby of the Firehall Arts Centre during the run of Chelsea Hotel, there were prints of the digital photography of Kevin Lanthier that immediately required a double take:

Like any city, Vancouver has its myths and clichés.   Being a lifelong resident of the Lower Mainland, these are as common to me as the North Shore Mountains, or Number 1 Highway.   As a digital photo artist, the ability to extract and recompose elements allows me to explore these ideas.   …

As such, Vancouver Specials is not at all about the strict documentation of the city, but rather presents a crafted idea of it as it exists in our thoughts and memories.

And then a third:

… when you look at these houses, all built over 100 years ago, there is a certain mood that differentiates East Van from the more storybook west side, and makes me wonder how long these older buildings are going to be around.

More of his work here.
