From Novae Res Urbis Vancouver:
Heather McNell, Metro Vancouver’s planning and policy analysis division manager, said during a panel discussion on the progress of the regional growth strategy that the main objective in the plan and a measure of progress is putting growth in the right places. McNell said the regional growth strategy draws a “really hard” urban containment boundary inside which is where growth is expected to occur.
.
“We believe we have enough capacity within this area to grow to 2040, and so far, in terms of looking at how we’re actually doing with that, over the course of the last two and a half years, we’re actually achieving about 98 per cent of our growth within that area,” she told about 60 people at one of Metro’s community sustainability breakfast events. “And the interesting part from my perspective is that is also already occurring in our urban centres and along transit corridors.”
.
She said within that boundary, about 75 to 80 per cent of growth is occurring through redevelopment and intensification in the urban areas and about 20 to 25 per cent is in relatively undeveloped areas.
