Conference: Climate Change and Solutions from Innovation – Nov 12

Building up to the United Nations Climate Change Conference to be hosted by France in December 2015 (COP 21-Paris Climate 2015), the Embassies of France in both Canada and the United States are organizing a series of events called “FACTS” for French Ameri-Can Climate TalkS in seven North-American cities.

FACTS aims to mobilize French, American, and Canadian public opinion on the issues of the conference and reinforce the dialogue between scientists, civil society representatives, NGOs, political figures, journalists and entrepreneurs from these countries.

FACTS will stop in Vancouver. The Consulate General of France along with SFU Woodward’s, Clean energy BC, the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies, the Tyee, and Hoggan&Associates are proud to present “Climate Change and Solutions from Innovation” talks on November, 12th.

  1. In other words: a socialist gathering .. will they sing the Internationale [ International Union Solidarity song] too ?
France has one of the worst economies in Europe and one of the highest unemployment rates among larger nations .. and high energy prices won;t fix that not huge subsidies in alternative energies !
How do they all get to this conference from France and elsewhere ? By e-boat to Halifax .. then e-bike or walk from there ?
Enjoy the hot air about global “warming” !

  2. End the enormous subsidies and tax breaks for animal agriculture!
With 60+ BILLION food animals on the planet our best chance to mitigate climate change is to severely reduce consumption of animal foods. More than 1/3 of human induced warming is attributable to animal agriculture. Methane is 24 times more potent than CO2 but takes only 7 years to cycle out of the atmosphere. CO2 takes around 100 years to come out. Human pursuit of animal protein is the leading cause of methane release and a primary cause of CO2 concentrating in the atmosphere. Check the facts and act!
“As environmental science has advanced, it has become apparent that the human appetite for animal flesh is a driving force behind virtually every major category of environmental damage now threatening the human future: deforestation, erosion, fresh water scarcity, air and water pollution, climate change, biodiversity loss, social injustice, the destabilization of communities, and the spread of disease.” Worldwatch Institute, “Is Meat Sustainable?”
“If every American skipped one meal of chicken per week and substituted vegetables and grains… the carbon dioxide savings would be the same as taking more than half a million cars off of U.S. roads.” Environmental Defense Fund
“A 1% reduction in world-wide meat intake has the same benefit as a three trillion-dollar investment in solar energy.” ~ Chris Mentzel, CEO of Clean Energy

Step by Step Guide: How to Transition to a Vegan Diet http://www.onegreenplanet.org/vegan-food/step-by-step-guide-how-to-transition-to-vegan-diet/

    1. Where are the subsidies ?
My understanding is that a balanced diet needs meat in it, and is one reason people live far longer today than 200 years ago.
Yes, you are right, we could eat less (red) meat. What specifically is subsidized ?
Isn’t fertilizer for crop food ALSO producing CO2 ?
Perhaps we need more trees ? No one ever talks about Canada’s huge HUGE tree mass .. probably one of the highest IN THE WORLD per capita, btw !

      1. “My understanding is that a balanced diet needs meat in it”
        Surprisingly, your understanding is incorrect.
“Amino acids are found in animal sources such as meats, milk, fish, and eggs. They are also found in plant sources such as soy, beans, legumes, nut butters, and some grains (such as wheat germ and quinoa). You do not need to eat animal products to get all the protein you need in your diet.” From US govt, here:

“Isn’t fertilizer for crop food ALSO producing CO2 ?”
Yes, but net losses to the food system of using land to grow crops for animals then feeding those crops to humans as a secondary consumer mean that it’s way less efficient on a nutrition:CO2 ratio, hence the CO2 (and other worse greenhouse gases) produced is much greater. Details here:

Always shocked by how little people from the deniosphere actually know about science and numerical data.

        1. Perhaps because they like meat over veggies or perhaps because they like a balanced diet. My understanding is that a no meat diet needs additional vitamins, i.e. is unhealthy. But, please, enlighten me.

  3. May I suggest, Gordon, you take a moment to look more closely at issues surrounding the implications of earth’s atmosphere!
    These links . . .

    . . .

. . . will introduce you to the research of real scientists free of political implications: I’m surprised you haven’t already seen either one.
The earth’s atmospheric temperatures, due mostly to the Sun’s activities, have been essentially static for the last twenty years and, whatever the implications, the influences are far greater than any human induced activities.
Your penchant for using your position to coerce sincere bloggers trying to figure out what is going on makes me wonder if your research is focused in the wrong places.
Repetitively showing arboreal scenes of your West End is understandable: it is your home.
But you do no service to good development in an area that, without the adjacent sea and park, is nothing more than banal urban sprawl with a hard on: likewise an excruciatingly banal North False Creek development extending from Burrard Bridge to the Viaduct!
Accordingly, Gordon, you may have served eight councils but you have not demonstrated to me experiential capabilities more than catering to the status quo. I cannot take your Price Tags seriously.
Vancouver deserves more than a few on-line gossipers enjoying a few moments of banter when the boss isn’t looking!
So far you have demonstrated little more than fear mongering.
If you chose to dismiss work of real scientists, as shown in the above link, then you have also lost my respect.
