Pre-Motordom: “”When the streets were your playground!”

North London, 1954

.

London

.

That was 60 years ago – less than a single lifetime. (How long to undo Motordom?)  Of course, looking forward from 60 years before that … and you might have come up with this, as a French illustrator did in 1910:

.

1910

What the Year 2000 would be like.

  1. I’d say 4-5 decades. Vancouver was built around a car, for 100+ years. It will be 40-50 years for a meaningful reduction and more public transit, road tolls, e-bikes, subways etc.

    Why:

The cell phone was invented 1973, and it took 30+ years for a meaningful impact on society in terms of jobs and relocation, or more like 40+, i.e. the 2000’s.

The internet was invented even earlier than that, in 1963 (ARPANET) .. see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arpanet .. and it took also 40+ years for a meaningful way to change society in terms of TV watching, blogs, work sharing, global collaboration etc. ..

  2. You should come and see how the parking lots are used here in the UAE to play cricket… but Anthony Bourdain found an interesting game of street bowling in Cork, Ireland. Check out that episode of his travel show…
