One of the great pleasures of the city is coming across a small green space, clearly serving the local neighbourhood and not the tourists, tucked into the dense fabric of a very compact city, cleverly designed for many users to share – like Jardins de Sant Pau del Camp (map here):
.
.
A block from the Parallel, one of Barcelona’s busiest, nosiest streets, and on the edge of the Raval, considered by some to be a rather sketchy neighbourhood, this is a tranquil retreat, suitable for the young couple on the bench in the background to, shall we say, negotiate their relationship – and maybe eventually to watch over their children from that same bench.
.
Jardins de Sant Pau feels sunk into the neighbourhood, a level lower than the apartments and the monastery that look down on the bougainvillea …
.
…and the community garden that legitimizes the name of the park.
