See how this uniquely Vancouver style is being reinvented

MKPhoto-3954Visit a Joe Wai Special (right), a uniquely Strathcona style built to quickly replace homes demolished in the first phase of a large scale freeway project.

We’ll also open a home built in the Special style but completely out of conrete block as is commonly seen in European homes. Opening up this floor plan meant carving out doorways and walls with a cement saw leaving the homeowner, a creative interior designer, with some unusual design challenges.

We will also open three beautifully modernized homes for those with a soft spot for the traditional Special.

Special’ Insight: Two Distinct Perspectives on the Vancouver Special – April 16

Hear from two very different speakers who bring new insight to the Special. First learn from Guido Wimmers, the man credited with bringing ‘Passive House’ standards to Canada, about how he adapted his own Vancouver Special to these very strict guidelines.

Then we’ll hear from architect Joe Wai about the the housing style he created to quickly restore housing to Strathcona after the first phase of the planned freeway demolished many homes. Both talks will be followed by Q&A.
