Images of Auckland – 1: Wynyard Quarter

In the next few weeks, images and videos of Auckland.

Let’s start with a highlight: the waterfront Wynyard Quarter.  If this was anywhere in North America, you’d already know about it.

Auckland’s waterfront is going through one of the largest urban regenerations in New Zealand, evolving form an industrial port area that was closed off to the public to a place where people can live and visit, be entertained and do business.  In 2011 the first stage of Wynyard Quarter redevelopment opened providing new places and spaces right next to the water’s edge.

Here’s a short video that provides before-and-after shots of a major brownfield opportunity still in transition.  If it reminds you of Granville Island – well, of course.  And in some ways, better.

  1. Important to note the old industrial vernacular is incorporated here and juxtaposed against a modern urban landscape combine this with superb programming and placemaking and you have one of the best new Urban spaces in the World. I suggest teams from Vancouver, New West and North Vancouver come down and see the spaces to generate ideas for their waterfronts in the future.

  2. I noted one project – a tram extension “A fast, frequent, high-capacity and low-impact transit service between Britomart and the Wynyard Quarter is essential to realise the potential of the quarter.” A bit like the “Olympic Line”. Which Granville Island still needs and would enable it to reduce some of the parking there given the huge and largely unused lot at Olympic Village station
