Extraordinary, really, that Vancouver is placed in the same category when cities like Paris look for world models to emulate. Here’s the Deputy Mayor in The Guardian:
While drafting my programme for Paris 2020, I was inspired by the visions of other great cities – including London, New York, Singapore, Sydney and Vancouver. One striking feature of their visions is that many of the challenges, objectives and strategies are similar, if not identical. Some issues are localised, but we are all dealing with sustainable development, efficient transport systems, energy savings, innovation ecosystems, food supply, resilience …
Of course, it’s possible that if the ALR and the urban growth boundary are busted open, transit expansion is rejected or underfunded, sustainability strategies are trumped by projects for oil, coal, bitumen and LNG, and energy-conservation and climate-change policies are then simply irrelevant, we might not be quite the model the Deputy Mayor thinks we are.
