Recommended: Traffic Engineering for Livable Communities

We’ll be watching this one at the SFU City Program develops “Next Generation Transportation.”  Here’s a sample:

I’m in Phoenix for an amazing NACTO conference. Highlights include learning about the NYC practice of “feathering.” Feathering refers to slowly reducing the percentage of signal green time along a corridor so cars “trickle in” and not bunch… up at one intersection. NYC was able to use it to remove a lane and reclaim space for peds. Rather impressive.

Given Facebook’s confusing site, I couldn’t find out who TLC actually is.  Nice photo, though.

  1. two quibble on the above pictured shared space:

    (1) the one way sign is too much autocentric. Since this street is not (or shoudn’t be) one way for cyclists:, the European sign should be that instead:

    (2) There is no clear line for the vision impaired folks to follow (the patio is infringing it too permanently)

    but otherwise, it is all good, and it should have been the design guideline to be followed for Union street
    (The work done there is disappointing to speak the least, and I personnaly fail to see any improvment for cyclists, especially EB – where I even believe it is worse than before, and more generally it fails to raise the quality of the street, to an urban living room)

    and it obviously provides good idea for Robson square and other street
