1939: Traffic on (and above) the Lions Gate Bridge

Ken Ohrn sends this frascinating shot along, taken in 1939, shortly after the Lions Gate Bridge opened:

1939 over Lions Gate bridge #4 B.R. Sqn RCAF - "Vancouver"

This photo is from my Dad’s collection.  He was an RCAF Sergeant stationed at Jericho Beach at the time.  The aircraft (a Stranraer) is shown flying over the newly-constructed Lions Gate Bridge.  The military unit was called RCAF #4 Bomber Reconnaissance Squadron.

.

I count about a dozen cars on this two-lane bridge.

  1. Great picture! I read the Wikipedia article on the Vickers Vancouver – it said they were ordered for firefighting but one was converted to a coastal patrol aircraft. Might that one be the one in this picture? You should upload the picture to Wikipedia, it’s a great one!
