Saturday in the City: A cycle in four parts

Grabbed the bike at noon and, on my way to dinner in Grandview, dropped by four events all happening on that cloudy/sunny Saturday afternoon in the city.
First: getting to downtown via the spanking new Comox Greenway:
Comox at Denman

…  and realized that though I’ve been watching it develop, I misunderstood its design.

.

Then past the Farmers’ Market at Mole Hill and on to the white tents of the Jazz Festival.

???????????????????????????????

… and realized how awkward are our public spaces,  and how truly hopeless our beer gardens.

.

Around False Creek to the Dragon Boat Races at Olympic Village.

???????????????????????????????

… and realized  how well the races capture that pervasive look of the young in Vancouver – that Asian/Caucasian mix – and  the obvious all-in-the-same boat-paddling-together metaphor of our time.

.

An hour left over to check out the Mac Parry show at the Wing Sang Building.

 ???????????????????????????????

… and realized I may have found the origins of the culture that emerged at the Dragon Boat Races.

.

I’ll take a look at each part in detail, starting tomorrow with the Comox Helmcken Greenway.
