When people were thin: The Lougheed Drive-In Swap Meet in 1978

From Bill Jeffries:

In case you happen to be driving (on transit? walking?) down Kingsway past Metrotown, the Burnaby Art Gallery is hosting a small show of 14 of the c. 120 images I made at the Lougheed Drive-In Swap Meet.  (The show is at the Burnaby Public Library at Metrotown to mid-February.)

Bill Jeffries: ‘The Lougheed Drive-In Swap Meet, Summer 1978’

December 3, 2012- February 17, 2013

Bob Prittie Library, Metrotown

The work in this exhibition has been chosen from a collection of 129 negatives donated to the City of Burnaby Archives by the photographer in 2012.

Bill Jeffries has served as Director/Curator of both Presentation House Gallery and Simon Fraser University Gallery.  At the time these photographs were made, Jeffries … was inspired by the temporary environment created by the Swap Meet.

.

Join us in the Program Room at Bob Prittie Library at 7:30 p.m., Monday December 3 for presentations by Bill Jeffries, City of Burnaby City Archivist Arilea Sill and Burnaby Village Museum Assistant Curator Tom Gooden concerning photography, the history of the Lougheed Drive-In site and the importance of municipal archives. Admission is free.

Also, swap meet junkies can view all the 1978 swap meet photos on the Burnaby Archives site – here.  Start at image #6 and you can scroll through the whole set by clicking ‘next’.
