In particular, check out the history and analysis of Whistler’s urban design – a particularly nice contrast between what was originally proposed and what was ultimately built, thanks to the influence of California landscape architect Eldon Beck.

The proposed site was the community garbage dump at the time.  …    A master plan for Whistler Village was developed and presented to Council.  The original plan was an “urban” solution, laid out to facilitate circulation and parcel subdivision, but making little concession to the natural context. Here is what it would have looked like. Yikes:
