The New Class Warfare over Bicycles

ANOTHER REASON WHY PDX BEATS YVR

Cyclists travelling to and from Portland International Airport have a new tool for at least one leg of their journey. A new bike assembly station on the lower terminal roadway will enable people travelling with bicycles to more easily assemble and disassemble their bikes before and after flights.

The station is also available to airport employees who bike to work. As an extra resource, Travel Oregon and the Port of Portland have basic bike tools available for check-out by cyclists assembling or disassembling their bikes.

  1. Re. the bike tools at the airport: that is a great idea! I hope more airports do this! Does anyone know of other airports that offer such a service? Do any offer boxes, as well?

  2. Wouldn’t it be smarter to pack your own bike tools (togther with tire repair kit, etc.) so you can be assured that you can reassemble it at your destination rather than relying on others to do it for you (and then getting pissed off if they don’t)?

    1. Having the tools at the airport is good for at least a couple of situations:

      1. Riding to Portland and flying back.
      2. Flying to Portland, touring around, and flying home.

As well, if more airports adopt this set-up, it would open the doors for flying with bikes to more destinations. Maybe they can do the same at train stations (though a luggage car with bicycle racks is much, much better!).

The first person with an email address couldn’t do anything with it, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a good idea to get it!
