Walking Tour 1: Japadog

Went for a walk yesterday, enjoying the Summer That Never Ends.  Thought I’d check to see what’s new.  Started at Burrard and Smithe.

Ate my first Japadog:

Who knew that meat byproducts and seaweed went so well together.  And is there any better metaphor for the cultural synergy of Vancouver at this moment in time?

  1. It can also be argued that it’s a direct result of the City’s overly restrictive policies for food carts – hot dogs are the pretty much only thing allowed, and as a result we are starting to see this kind of creativity around that basic form (I understand there is also a Mexi-dog somewhere about town, too.)

It’s nice, but I suspect a lot of people would be happier to see more diversity of street food…

  2. Yes, yes! Japadog is my favorite hot dog in Vancouver. Also agreed that a greater variety of cart food as in Manhattan and would add a lot to street life/sense of community here, too.

  3. While I would prefer a little more variety as well, you have to admit w/o the current bylaws there would not have been a Japadog. As they say neccessity is the mother of invention. I look forward to more wonderful and perhaps some not so wonderful creations brought forward under the current rules.
Perhaps our own version of the Mtl smoked ham sandwich or Philly cheese steak is just around the corner.

  4. There is a hotdog stand in front of Waterfront station
(just east) that is specializing in Tikka masala (sp) hotdogs, had one today it was pretty good.
