Jot Kali and Rush Dhillon have come up with an intriguing idea over at idea.wirus, an intriguing site all on its own.
They want to combine social networking with an urban public square: “The square itself will act as a network hub to draw people into the area and its various activities while honoring traditional uses.”
For example:
… if Albert thought a small club of Vietnamese Pho soup enthusiasts would be a good idea, he could send a text message to a number belonging to the square : Pho fans of Vancouver unite ! Join me to find the best Pho in Vancouver. First meeting at Future Space Public Square Pod 3 at 3pm Sunday. This message would show up on the Public Square social networking page, and on the big screen in the square.

Thank you Dr. Price for posting this. Its common knowledge that LA gets so much world mind share because its the home of hollywood. LA does a good job on fostering this public view with various shrines to its industry. Yet video games are an industry almost as large as hollywood, the average 15 to 35 year old spends more time on this activity than any other, and its renown as an art form for its difficulty and beauty.
Why isn’t Vancouver celebrating its place as a world leader of this art form? We should see ourselves as the epicenter of the world for technology and interactive.
If you believe the public square idea presented above would help in showcasing Vancouver as a technology leader please leave feedback on the site. I’ll do my best to get some momentum behind the idea.
If Canada and Vancouver wants to move beyond the world just seeing as a place to mine raw resources, we need to celebrate what we already excel at. This includes being world leaders in technology.
