  1. I learned about the urban heat island effect in the late 1980s and it’s finally good to see more action on the subject. Yes, we need to mediate the effect through more greenspace, larger species trees with large canopies and green roofs. The reflective or albedo effect also needs to be part of the solution. Building codes and bylaws need to prohibit black asphalt and require white or lighter shade roofing. Water collection methods that don’t compromise roof membranes/ rain screens need to also allow for evaporation over time and minimize mosquito breeding.
