Cultivating responsible recreation practices – a discussion of existing and emerging approaches
We all know that not everybody is as mindful of their outdoor impacts as they ought to be, but how successful are existing education efforts, such as Leave No Trace, and what else can be done to foster more responsible low impact behaviours?
Join the Outdoor Recreation Council of BC for a discussion and Q&A with academic Clara-Jane Blye (University of Alberta), Tread Lightly educator Brian Pratt (Four Wheel Drive Association of BC), BC Parks’ education and learning lead, Sherry Lu, John Rae from the Sea to Sky Destination Management Council, and “105 Hikes” author and responsible recreation advocate, Stephen Hui, to learn more about best practices in responsible recreation programming and environmental communication for behaviour change.

Presenter biographies:
Clara-Jane (CJ) Blye, University of Alberta: Clara-Jane (CJ) is a Recreation Management faculty member at Dalhousie University, and she is also completing her Ph.D. at the University of Alberta in the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation. CJ’s research is focused on outdoor recreation policy, park management, environmental psychology, and connections to nature. She uses mixed methods in her research and has a strong applied focus to her work. CJ has worked with NGOs and park agencies such as Parks Canada, Alberta Parks, and Ontario Parks to develop theoretical and practical research that park managers can use in developing policies and strategies. She has advanced statistical training and expertise in survey development and implementation strategies. Currently, she is looking at visitor motivations, nature-relatedness, and experiences of New Canadians visiting Elk Island National Park.
Brian Pratt, Four Wheel Drive Association of BC: Brian is newly retired from Douglas College in New Westminster, where he worked within the 2-year diploma Stagecraft and Event Technology Department. He has been involved with the Four Wheel Drive Association of British Columbia for 5 years and a Master Tread Trainer for TreadLightly! for just over a year.
Stephen Hui, author and responsible recreation advocate: Stephen has been hiking, backpacking, and scrambling in B.C.’s Coast Mountains for 30 years. Hui is the author of Best Hikes and Nature Walks With Kids In and Around Southwestern British Columbia, a new guide to 55 fun hiking trails. Sherry Lu, BC Parks: Sherry Lu is the Education and Learning Project Lead at BC Parks. She has over ten years of experience in community engagement and informal education. She is interested in park visitor education and behaviour change and will be chatting about BC Parks initiatives and partnerships around responsible recreation.
John Rae, Sea to Sky Destination Management Council: John has 35 years of experience in strategic planning for a wide range of initiatives, initially in Toronto in senior corporate roles and, since 2003, with the Resort Municipality of Whistler. As the RMOW’s Manager of Cultural Planning & Development, he develops opportunities for residents and visitors to experience Whistler in its entirety: its geodiversity, biodiversity, history & heritage, lifestyle, arts, built environment, narratives and stories.
