Ken and I agree: the roof of VPL Central is now one of the best public spaces in Vancouver . And there are lots of reasons.
My favourite is the mid-city panorama. From every direction on the deck, you look into this 1990s-2000s neighbourhood at eight-storeys up.

Everyone who looks becomes a bit of an urbanist.

Better than a peephole in a construction fence: the view of the changing city from above.

A few last pieces left to complete the cityscape of millennial Vancouver.

Yup, I can’t wait to see it! I’ll be up there in late October or early November, and hopefully I’ll see both of you when I’m there! 🙂 I’ll be hitting at LEAST 100 very specific places that are all about either great placemaking, cycling infrastructure, super eco-friendly features, or ideally all three!! 🙂

Too bad we didn’t get to see this during the AIA Committee on Design tour of Vancouver last Spring. Wonderful views of what we were touring at ground level.
I think among the key ingredients of a good public space is:
-a relaxed balance between gathering, socializing and movement
-movable tables and chairs
-sunshine and ideally a warm microclimate being protected from wind
-easy access to food
-people
-parents feel comfortable leading go of a toddler’s hand and letting them wander a bit (need to be careful about folks on wheels riding through gathering spaces)
They should extend the C B C plaza over a closed Hamilton street to the library
