From Alice Fraser in Great Britain comes this wonderful image of an installation in Liverpool called “The Umbrella Project” with two hundred bright umbrellas hung over Church Alley. A project to bring attention to ADHD and Autism, each umbrella is signed by a child indicating their “hidden super power”.
The YouTube video below highlights the experience of walking below the umbrellas. The umbrellas themselves create changing geometric shadow patterns on the laneway. It’s a very simple but highly effective way to whimsically change space and bring attention to an important cause.
No need to go to Liverpool; we have a similar installation in Yaletown. https://urbanyvr.com/yaletown-umbrella-art. The art installation, called “Underbrella,” was installed by the Yaletown Business Improvement Association in Bill Curtis Square, behind the Canada Line station.
