Notable events in the region that year: Canadian Pacific Airways began flying direct from Vancouver to Montreal, the “Deas” (Massey) Tunnel opened to traffic, and Oakridge Centre at 41st Avenue and Cambie Street welcomed customers as Vancouver’s first shopping mall.
I just watched the DVD included in the BC Museum book: Free Spirit – 7 travelogues from the 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s – wish there was more than a cameo of Vancouver.
Similar to the photo above, BC’ers evidently spent a huge amount of time at the beach; when they weren’t driving to the beach (the descriptions of the roads was almost pornographic); flying to the beach, or obsessing over strawberries, cherries, and peaches.
Surprisingly, what struck me, was how thin everyone appeared – and I don’t think they were planted. We aren’t like Americans, but a lot of us have gotten porky.
