In 1960 Jane Jacobs’s book The Death and Life of Great American Cities sent shockwaves through the architecture and planning worlds, with its exploration of the consequences of modern planners’ and architects’ reconfiguration of cities. Jacobs was also an activist, who was involved in many fights in mid-century New York, to stop “master builder” Robert Moses from running roughshod over the city.
This film retraces the battles for the city as personified by Jacobs and Moses, as urbanization moves to the very front of the global agenda.
Panel discussion to follow our Tuesday, April 25th, screening. Panelists include: former Vancouver city planner Brent Toderian, designer Yuri Artibise and architect Elizabeth Mackenzie.

Jane Jacobs – also known as the “Queen of Gridlock”! Now there’s one woman who should never, never have been allowed into our country! She came up here so her sons wouldn’t have to defend her own country – hardly something to be proud of. She had absolutely no respect for the law. She was selfish and inconsiderate. She is the main reason why millions of commuters every day are stuck in needless traffic in Toronto. She did more to ruin our country than anyone else in modern history. She had no formal training and because of that, she has caused a mess that still lingers to the present day. I wonder if this film will expose that? If my stomach was steel-lined, perhaps I could bear to sit through it… but it isn’t so I won’t go near it. We have to suffer everyday in needless gridlock because of her. One can only hope that karma exists and that she reaped the “rewards” due her…
April 1st was two days ago.
Or maybe Toronto’s gridlock would’ve been worse without Jane. More roads create more traffic, closing roads (or not building them in the first place) reduces traffic https://pricetags.wordpress.com/2017/03/30/paris-road-closures-traffic-evaporation-and-braesss-paradox/
She created traffic gridlock. She was arrogant and self-centred. We are suffering today from her interference. The sooner she is forgotten, the better.
It looks like freewaydriver has an alias.
Jane Jacobs is one of my heroes. I am so happy that she helped to slow down the freeway madness for at least a few cities including Vancouver. The alternative would have been a city criss-crossed with freeways Would that have been better? And when I cycle (which I do for almost all trips), there is no congestion at all. Vancouver is a great city and she helped to make it so.
The more I read freewaydriver’s comments the more I am convinced s/he is a troll operating out of a bunker in Russia.
If you cycle in Toronto near Casa Loma (it’s a castle), you’ll see this great Jane Jacobs’ quote: https://cyclewriteblog.files.wordpress.com/2014/05/janejacobs.jpg
