Point Grey Road Marches On

The last phase of the Point Grey Road Seaside Greenway work is well underway.  Wider sidewalks, with further spacing from the road, and city-owned land for them reclaimed from residents’ encroachment.
Note the level sidewalks, with no driveway dips — making runner, ped and wheelchair travel much easier.

  1. Another good reason for a flat and uninterrupted sidewalk is that it provides a visual cue as to right of way. There are way too many driveways and parking lot entrances which have the driving surface continue across the sidewalk. In the Netherlands, the sidewalk often extends uninterrupted across side streets as well.

  2. Excellent comment Arno. Before, this stretch of Point Grey Road looked like a collection of driveways, from the property lines to the street curb, with sections of sidewalk stopping and starting between them. Now, it looks like a proper sidewalk, with driveways crossing it, but with drivers clearly not having priority over people walking. Which is what the law has always said, but not what it looked like, so consequently not reinforcing of safe behaviours.
The raised sidewalks are what is proposed for all along 10th Ave near the hospital, for the same reason. Not just raised across driveways, there, but raised across intersections as well, where possible.
The improvements here look really good. Looking forward to seeing it finished.

  3. Downtown the City has introduced concrete “crosswalks” to continue the sidewalk across alleys.

So I guess that Point Grey Road residents didn’t vote / pay up to have the overhead wires placed underground? I thought that was an option.

  4. I love the level sidewalks. This hopefully might happen on Great Northern way after the construction is completed on the educational buildings and there are no longer any big trucks using the ramps.
