In Melbourne, this person stacks headgear to protect their face from sun and their wallet from fines. Melbourne being one of the very few places on earth with a mandatory helmet law besides BC.

Thanks to Kay Teschke for the twittery tip.

Australia seems to be the testing ground for the automotive industrial complex to try out ways to lessen alternatives. They did a sleazy thing last year where they combined a bunch of anti-cycling measures into a bill but threw in a 1 Metre passing law as a bargaining chip. People bought it and now that it has passed they’re not enforcing the passing law but are enforcing the anti-cycling laws.
It’s one thing to have a product and sell it and it’s quite another thing to infiltrate governments and create an environment to allow your product as the only choice.
I’m hoping that people in Australia will learn from this and not get fooled again.
Don’t forget your neighbors to the south – King Country, WA – also has a mandatory helmet law.
