A necessary luxury in New York

That supertall building in Brooklyn, posted below, is going to have a very big bike room, as will others – as the New York Times reports:

Driven by demand as well as a city mandate, developers and building owners are carving out bike rooms for residents to store what for some has become their transportation mode of choice.

The state-of-the-art spaces often have their own entrances, saving wear-and-tear on the lobby and passenger elevators. They also offer their own gear by way of pumps and repair stands, and, sometimes, homey touches like hooks for hanging helmets. In the fancier buildings, porters and door attendants act as bike valets.

“People come to an open house and ask, ‘Do you have a gym, a roof deck, a doorman?,’ ” said David Maundrell III, the executive vice president forBrooklyn and Queens new development of Citi Habitats. “Now they also ask, ‘Do you have a bike room?’ ”

  1. Thoughts that come to mind –
    – ground floor for the bike room is nice, but 850 sq ft isn’t very big for a bike room for a tower.
    – if it’s ground floor facing the street (rather than a courtyard, etc.), wouldn’t that space be more productive as neighbourhood retail?

  2. Bike rooms definitely need more eyes on them. I really like the idea of one with a large window on the ground floor.

Probably would reduce the incidence of theft from my building
