We all love the discussions that PT’s readers contribute to the site. They bring the site to life, and complement the posts’ topics with insight and depth.
But when things get going, sometimes a reply gets indented too far, and we see the dreaded “one word per line” comment, which is hard to read, and diminishes the comments’ value. Nobody likes this.
We’d like to fix it, within the limits of PT’s tech platform. Starting today, comments will only go to 4 levels, down from the current 6 levels. If you want to “reply” to a comment at level 4, there will be no reply button, and you’ll have to go up a level or two to find a “reply” button.

What about an edit function and basic editor to insert images, write in bold or italics without learning HTML ?
The problem you’re trying to address is the cummulative indent applied to threaded comments, which is purely presentation style, and your proposed solution is to restrict content or hack structure.
PT’s tech platform is WordPress.com and presentation styles are set mainly with the theme, so choosing a new and more appropriate theme will resolve this as well as some of the other known and as yet unidentified issues with the readability and usability of this blog.
