While visiting my friend in San Diego, we took a tour of the old streetcar suburbs northeast of Balboa Park. One of our stops in the North Park hood was this recent refurbishment of a bland 1950’s courtyard apartment complex into a kind of Melrose Place for Hipsters.

Developed by San Diego’s LWP Group and specifically their Community by LWP division, they have transformed a rundown complex into an amenity-rich home for young professionals with an angle for enjoying communal social space.

Residents enjoy a pool with poolside wifi, bocce ball court, common areas with streaming music, community gardens, BBQ and bike share. I personally love the lockable skateboard rack at the entry to the complex (right).
What stuck out was the colourful graphics and art installations adorning the building. As the company website points out: “Much like the hip and happening neighborhood where it’s located, Community@Joy wears its urbanity happily and proudly. Similarly, Joy building members fully embrace the easy accessibility to independent shops, bars, restaurants and galleries.

A most interesting development, kind of an urban commune with private rooms. Love that graphic of the Eames!
