History of Housing in Vancouver: Equity Co-ops

More from Neil Whaley on the history of housing in Vancouver.

.

I’m interested in the history of equity co-ops in Vancouver and I came across a two-page advertising feature in the Feb 7, 1948 Sun:

It attributes the idea to someone named E.D. Cope of the RCAF, who came across the concept while stationed in WWII in England.

.

Classified ads in November 1946 expected that the first Self Owned Apartments Ltd co-op would be ready for occupancy in June 1947 (but it appears that they sold all their suites before then, so there was no need for a later classified ad which would indicate if they opened on schedule).
