October in New York: Supertalls and Downtown Brooklyn

Infill is not just confined to sliced blobs.  Tall thin towers proliferate in the trending neighbourhoods, notably in the downtown financial district and surrounding blocks of the World Trade Centre:

Nor are the supertalls confined to Manhattan, as seen in this item Spank contributed from New York Yimby:

Supertall Brooklyn

Back in June of 2014, YIMBY reported on new building applications filed by JDS Development for a tower coming to 340 Flatbush Avenue Ext., on the southeastern edge of Downtown Brooklyn. Now, we have the first rendering and actual details for the SHoP-designed tower, which will rise 1,000 feet tall, claiming the title of New York City’s tallest building outside of Manhattan, and giving Brooklyn its first legitimate supertall skyscraper.

I’m familiar with this site in downtown Brooklyn; it’s just up the street from a new condo I stayed in last March at 388 Bridge:

This mid-block infill isn’t alone.

The strategy is obvious: add tens of thousands of new residents to reinvigorate an historic urban centre, along with new investments in arts/sports and office space for tech. Of course, that has also raised questions about displacement, gentrification and class.

In a way, though, downtown Brooklyn is returning its role as a regional centre for government, the arts and business – as reflected in its extraordinary stock of heritage buildings, now being repurposed and integrated into residential developments.
