And you think our housing shortage is bad now …

I had heard Vancouver had a post-war housing shortage, but I didn’t know what form that took until I looked through some 1946 & ’47 classified ads for rental accommodation.

  • landlords asked for leases of as long as five years
  • owners made suggestions like this: invest two years’ rent in advance to help with construction costs, and once the owner had built the suites he would allow the tenant to move in & rent the place.

And these weren’t one-off proposals — variations turn up with some regularly.
