Walking Tours: Commercial Drive– Little Italy

If you enjoyed Italian Day last weekend, you will love this chance to learn a bit more about this diverse neighbourhood. The section of Commercial Drive known as Vancouver’s “Little Italy” represents 50 years of history. This neighbourhood has changed dramatically over the last decade with businesses reflecting the changes in the community. Join Maurice Guibord for a walk down Commercial Drive where he’ll talk about “Kits-ification,” the role of family businesses, coffee culture, and of course, development pressures.

Update: The Heritage Site Finder interactive map

.

Last year VHF launched the beta version of an interactive map which plots all sites listed on Vancouver’s Heritage Register. We are happy to announce that thanks to the dedication and hard work of a wonderful team of volunteers, most of the 2,200 sites found on the map now have a current image! There is also now a mobile-friendly version thanks to the team at Split Mango Media Inc.

You can use the map as a tool to see which heritage sites are already listed or designated, and which ones aren’t but could be nominated to the Heritage Register Update. Nominations are open until September 12.
 .
Click Here to visit the latest version of the Heritage Site Finder. Please note if you have viewed the map previously you may need to clear your browser history to see all the updates. We are also now looking for volunteer researchers to help add information about each site listed on the map. If you are interested in helping out please contact Special Project Coordinator Jessica Quan.

  1. Just checked out the heritage map, nicely done. Can’t seem to reproduce the data though. Re-ran my script to update to the newest version of CoV open data for the heritage sites (dropped 147 of the 2287 CoV heritage sites that did not have a valid tax code), but the result still gives me a different list of heritage sites… http://www.mountainmath.ca/map/special/11

For example, the heritage website does not list any heritage home west of Blanca, but the CoV database does. Is there an even newer database of heritage sites that is different from CoV open data?
