Dealing With Dragons: Deciding If, When And How To Intervene In Ecosystems In A Rapidly Changing World

Rapid, extensive and ongoing global climate change is causing unprecedented shifts in ecosystems. Traditional conservation goals and methods are increasingly insufficient in the face of this rapid pace of change. The principles of restoration ecology and conservation biology are being debated and must be reshaped to respond to this new reality. Deciding when and how to intervene (or not), and why, is an emerging and vital challenge for conservation.

Chelene Knight, a graduate of The Writer’s Studio at SFU, has been published in Sassafras Literary MagazineRoomemerge 2013 and Raven Chronicles and is a member of the editorial board at Room.

Dina Del Bucchia is co-artistic director of the Real Vancouver Writers’ Series. She writes and thinks about pop culture, self-help, celebrities, comedy, and of course emotions and otters.

Reel Causes: Screening Of Northern Grease

Northern Grease follows a group of self-described “young, hairy Dudes” on their 6-month, 5,200 kilometer adventure in their vegetable oil powered bus in search of snow, surf, and insights into the industrial, economic and social changes taking place in northern BC and Alberta. Their journey juxtaposes the beauty of snow-covered mountains and remote coastlines with shocking environmental changes wrought by large-scale energy projects in pristine areas of western Canada, and chronicles their mission to understand Canadian resource extraction.
