Scot’s second look at Millennials and urban form – with a surprising look at what’s up in Johannesberg.

Once considered one of the world’s most dangerous cities, Millennials are revitalizing a section of Johannesburg’s CBD once left for dead by massive business and white flight from the mid 90’s onward to the northern community of Sandton.

The Maboneng Precinct is a product of tactical urbanism, placemaking and program of mixed use within a light-industrial area of forgotten mid-century buildings.

It appears the artists started the wave as they hunted out cheap live work space, and the creative class and tech crowd wasn’t far behind. Cities thrive when people can engage in a lower risk venture of designing and building cool stuff in a creative live/work setting – as seen in the Maboneng Precinct (website here).
