UBC/UEL Alliance for Biking and Walking

Tanya Paz and Thomas Beyer both think you should check this out:

Go to the UBC/UEL Alliance for Biking and Walking website and sign on to support improvements in both access and on campus roads.  These are much needed improvements, as anyone who travels by bike or walks to and around UBC knows.

  1. It would be nice to see UBC/UEL take a look at creating a separated bike lane along SW Marine Dr. Currently, it is adjacent to the pseudo-highway with traffic travelling +80km/h. In addition to this, it is frustrating that the paving done in September still remains without painted lines on top of sections of this route. It certainly does not gel with UBC’s sustainable transportation targets outlined in their 2014 Transportation Plan.

Maybe I’m just bitter because there was lots of ice covering this bike lane today en route to campus…. is it too much to ask for the bike lane to be plowed/salted as well?

  2. UBC is hard to get into and out of by bike. Something is needed. Also within the campus there are a few very obvious things that could be done to make it better.
Being that it’s a campus with a population that is young and presumably on a fixed income, being able to cycle to and from class would be an advantage. They could easily have a nice cycle network within the entire campus and student housing areas.
