Back by popular demand, Last Candidate Standing – a unique event that is open to each and every candidate running for mayor and council. …
The event is hosted by our lively and soon-to-be-revealed MC, features the Panel of Inquisition (aka local journalists and notables). It’s eclectic, informative and entertaining. There’s a house band, musical interludes and a gong.
How it works: Structured as a series of rotating debates, the event starts when the names of all candidates are put into a drum. A handful of names are randomly drawn at a time, and each ‘set’ of candidates has a question posed to them by the ‘Panel of Inquisition’ – a group of local journalists and notables.
The best answers from each set – as determined by a combination of votes and audience applause – earn a pass to the next round. The next set of names is drawn and the process repeats itself until all participants have had a chance to answer a question. A musical interlude takes place and the next round begins, and the event continues until there’s one last candidate standing. The ‘contest’ – such as it is – is good fun and is designed to encourage a lively atmosphere, good civic engagement, and the chance to showcase the widest possible range of candidates.
